SUSSEX COUNTY

CANDLE STARTS FIRE: An unattended candle in a bedroom started a fire east of Rehoboth Beach that caused $40,000 damage to two homes, the state Fire Marshal's Office said Monday. The fire in the first block of Spinning Wheel Lane in the Colonial East mobile-home community was reported shortly before 10:20 a.m. Volunteers from the Lewes, Indian River and Rehoboth Beach fire companies found heavy smoke coming from one home, which sustained about $37,500 in damage. A neighbor's home had about $2,500 exposure damage, officials said.

HOUSE FIRE CALLED ARSON: Investigators say someone poured flammable liquid on a Laurel home early Monday and set it on fire. The Laurel Fire Company arrived about 1:20 a.m. to find the residents of the single-family home in the 500 block of Center St. had already extinguished the fire, the state Fire Marshal's Office reported. No injuries were reported, and damage was estimated at $250. Officials asked anyone with information to contact the Sussex division of the state Fire Marshal's Office at 856-5600 or Crime Stoppers at (800) TIP-3333.

MOBILE-HOME FIRE: A mobile-home fire east of Frankford caused about $28,000 damage, the state Fire Marshal's Office reported Monday. The Roxana and Frankford fire companies found heavy smoke coming from the structure when they arrived at 6:55 p.m. Saturday in the 32000 block of Gum Road. Investigators said the fire was started by a child playing with a cigarette lighter on top of a mattress. No injuries were reported.

NEW CASTLE COUNTY

POLICE OFFICER SAVES WOMAN: New Castle County police are crediting Officer Gregory Meyer with saving a Bear woman's life Saturday by using a defibrillator on a heart attack call. Police said the 70-year-old's heart stopped and an emergency call went out about 4:06 p.m. Meyer left another assignment and arrived in the 700 block of Kilgor Court in Glasgow Pines to find the woman's son performing CPR. He got a portable defibrillator from his car and applied a shock, then did CPR until paramedics arrived. The woman was taken to Christiana Hospital, where she is being treated.

WILMINGTON

BODIES IN GARAGE IDENTIFIED: Wilmington police said the man and woman found dead in a garage Friday night were Pierre Washington, 19, and Mariah Briscoe, 18, both of Wilmington. Police did not give the manner of death for the two, found in the 1900 block of Tulip St., between North Lincoln and North Union streets. Initial investigation found no obvious signs of injury. The two were last seen Thursday evening. Investigation has determined that Washington rents the garage where they were found. She had borrowed the vehicle from a friend.
